Care for Your Digital Collection

Tips for Caring Your Digital Collection

  • Preserve your digital collection as an intact archive. In order to protect the integrity of the collection and to ensure that you'll always find the images you search for, avoid moving files from the folders they have been processed into.

  • Refrain from "cleaning" the archive of seemingly blank images or others you may not want. Many scanned image files have faintly visible annotations scanned to separate image files. Moving or deleting any files or folders can damage the continuity of your archive.

  • Before editing any individual images, copy folders or your archive to your own computer, Dropbox account, Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud Drive or other cloud storage provider.

  • Share large folder copies via email with links to Dropbox Transfer, Apple Mail Drop.

  • Securely back up your edited digital files to physical storage media such as hard drives, flash drives, network storage.

  • Optical media (CD, DVD, BlueRay disc) technology is on a path to obsolescence, and it is not recommended for storage of digital content.
